10 quick facts on Octopuses:


  1. An octopus has three hearts
    • Two hearts are used to pump blood to the lungs
    • Third pumps blood throughout the body.
  2. Some species of octopuses can immediately change their appearance with the help of pigment cells and muscles in their skin.
  3. They are known to eject a cloud of black ink when attacked by a predator.
  4. Some octopuses turns white when scared. 
  5. Sometimes, they may also shed an arm to escape a predator. The lost arm regrows in some time.
  6. Octopi have short lifespans.
    • Generally vary between six months and five years.
  7. Octopi are highly intelligent.
    • Believed to be the smartest of all invertebrates.
    • Show great skill at problem solving (instead of relying on instincts).
  8. Octopus blood is light blue.
  9. They have highly developed sense of sight and touch but are completely deaf.
  10. An adult Octopus can squeeze through a hole the size of a dime.
    • They are boneless creatures.
